11.11.15 Production Unit
Costumes for wintershow: It is winter in our play and we are looking for a winters tale-feeling. Think of Oliwer Twist and Charles Dickens; suspenders/braces, coats, wollen jumpers and six pences. If you haven`t got anything like this, please come dressed in something that works for the scene that you are in (if you are outside-outside clothes. If you are inside-inside clothes).
Students are working towards a performance.
We are devising a play through improvisation,
based on a famous fairytale about the little match girl who spends the last day of the year alone in the cold.
Students are also using some of their puppets towards the performance. We need to be focused, clear, creative and respectful to our story and each others work.
Wednesday 18th of November 2015
Students are starting to rehearse their performance. All students have now received roles and we will work on developing their characters and our story.
I hope that parents can help students to find a suitable costume.
I will be helpful in regards of telling them what I would like and I will also try to see if I can find them something.
If student does not have a costume-I ask that they come in ALL black. Longsleeve and long legs.
Monday 5th of October
Students will use their creativity to create a puppet. They will find character, physicality and voice of their puppet. As an end task students will create little scenes with their puppets.
Please scroll down for weekly updates.
Friday 30th of October 2015
Students have improvised ideas to construct a play based on different sections of one play. They were focusing on clarity and audience. Challenging our creativity.
Monday 19th of October 2015
Students are working on their improvisational skills, constructing a story based on a familiar fairytale. We will link our puppets up to characters towards creating a play.
Wednesday 14th of October 2015
Students created their own puppet and gave the character qualities of movement and a voice. They presented their puppet and then their character. We have also started improvising around ideas for our Wintershow.
Thursday 17th of September
Students have worked on movement, characters and status in regards to characters and situations they have read about in the Garbage King. Next week students will present a situation from the story in groups. Making sure that they meet our criteria: Clear voice, facing audience, clarity of movement and using tempo as en element in their presentation.

Monday 1st of June 2015
Today students have written a biography for their character. They were asked to come in with some written work but since only one student had prepared, we needed to spend time in class writing rather than exploring and researching.
Monday 13th of April 2015
Our script and story is coming to an end and we are excited to start improvising and rehearsing. All students are asked to come in with a clear idea for the end next monday. This is our script so far:
“The Sleeping
Legend”
An unknown virus is
spreading rapidly. People are falling into comas/a sleep which they
can not be woken up from. A group of four friends/scientists are
working together non stop to try and find a cure. This virus has been
spreading for the past three days and only a few people are still
awake across the planet.
The four friends are in
a cave wearing special suits and working with theories to find a
cure.
Reporter: The
virus has now spread to every continent and the whole world is
affected by this virus called the “Sleepo360”. Scientists across
the globe are working non stop to find a solution to this horrific
virus.
Thomas:I found
it! I knew I had read about something similar in one of my old
storybooks from the middle east, where the legend says how the whole
world falls asleep.
Annie: Really,
let me see
John holds up the book
and as the moon lights threw it there is an Islamic writing on the
wall
Thomas: Look at
the wall, what is that?
Dahlia: That is
Arabic and it says something about a legend. I can`t read it properly
because it is very old Arabic and written as some kind of a riddle.
John: Quickly,
take a photo of the wall before it disappears.
Dahlia takes a picture
and starts to work on the writing. She gathers many books and sits
down in front of the computer.
Thomas: The
legend says that that 4000 years ago the whole world slept for 1
year, until a lonely Beduin horse whisperer who lived completely by
himself in the desert came with the discovery of the cocoa bean. He
sat down around a bonfire and started to brew a..
Dahlia and
Thomas:chocolate drink and people started waking from the aroma.
Dahlia: Here is
what it means guys: When the silver rays shine on the seventh cave on
the tip of the Asian tooth, the beans of magic has the power to wake
the sleeping world
John:What does
that mean?
Annie: Asian
tooth?
Dahlia: I`m not
sure...
Annie: I`ve
always thought that India looks like a tooth..... Oh my God, it
could mean the 7 caves of the 7 kings, down by Tiruvanantapuram
Thomas: What does
the silver rays mean?
John: Full moon,
it must mean the full moon, quickly when is the next full moon?
Annie: In three
days
Dahlia: How are
we going to get there in time?
Thomas: Well
everyone else is sleeping so I`m sure we`ll get a ticket.
Vikash: Mr
Thomas? Welcome to India, I will be your guide to the caves. I hope
your flight was good and I am sorry we won`t be able to find you food
because all the restaurants are closed due to sleeping staff, but I
did get you many bananas and mangos.
Dahlia:
We are so happy that you could help us, but how is it that you are
still awake?
Vikash:
Luckily we are still not as heavily affected as the rest of the
world. Yet.
Annie:
Let`s go. We have no time to waste.
They
all get into a waiting jeep
Vikash:
Hello Shruti, let`s get our friends to the 7 caves as soon as
possible. Before we fall asleep ha ha ha
Shruti:
Welcome to India my friends
They
drive off and
Shruti:
Here we are, it is up there on the right. Good luck!
He
pushes Vikash gently on the shoulder
Shruti:
Time to get out my friend
Vikash
is sleeping
Shruti:
I`m sorry my friends but Vikash seems to be sleeping. This virus is
about to eat us all
John:
You are going to have to show us the caves Shruti
Shruti:
I don`t know the secret entrance to the caves I`m afraid
Everybody
jumps as an old man is banging on the car windows
Everybody:
AAEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
John:
Calm down, he is trying to tell us something
Dahlia:
Swipe down the window
Annie
swipes down the window
Old
Man Bubba: (In Tamil) Follow me. I`ve been expecting you
Thomas:
What is he saying?
Shruti:
That is strange, I have no idea who he is but he is saying that he
has been expecting you and then he keeps repeating the word “legend”
They
jump out of the car and follow the old man Bubba. Shruti melts to the
ground and Dahlia who is at the back sees it
Dahlia:
Shruti has fallen. Let`s speed up
Thomas:
Let`s get the extra protection suit out and on the old man
Thomas
is trying to get Bubba to put the suit on but he just looks at them
as if they are crazy, he says something in Tamil and laughs and
shakes his head
They
all try to convince him and use body language and expressions to tell
him to put the suit on and he just walks off. They follow
Annie:
There. That must be the entrance to the caves
Thomas
falls to the ground
Dahlia:
Thomas just fell. Thomas, are you ok? Thomas!!
She
bends down and sees that there is a cut in his suit
Dahlia:
Thomas has been struck by “Sleepo360”. Hurry and watch your suits
carefully
Old man Bubba:
(In Tamil) Only you. Only you can find
He
points to Dahlia
John:
You are going to be fine. We have radio contact. Be careful. We will
be waiting right here
Annie:
You can do it Dahlia. We have come all this way and the world is
depending on us
Dahlia:
I am going in

We are busy writing our script, based loosely on their unit work. Our play is called "The Sleeping Ledgend" and it is turning out to be a mystery adevnture. After Easter we will start to experiment with script and caharcters and we will start rehearsing from the written script once I have cast the play.
Here is the start of our story and children are to come in with ideas for the solution!

Monday 2nd of March 2015
In our new unit we are going to be working from a different point of view.
We are going to write a script and work on our characters based on the text. Our improvisational skills may be used to explore our characters but the situations and text will be set. We will try linking our work up towards their unit inquiry. We work on reaction and concentration skills, as they are super important in any acting situation. Listening and responding is just as important as when you have no idea what is going to be the next move, as is the situation when you improvise.
Monday 9th of February 2015
On our last lesson this unit, we finished with a team performance, based on improvising the other persons story. Key elements were CLARITY and COMMITMENT to story, words and expressions. We show enthusiasm and understanding but we can see how we need to work on confidence in expressing ourselves, commiting to characters and situation.

Students are writing a short story |
We continue to work on improvisation and being creative. This week students were asked to spend 15 minutes writing a short story and then we worked on clarity of the text and voice, practising our presentation skills. Next week we will use these stories for improvisations, keeping focus on clarity of expression and movement, as well as words + voice.

Monday 12th of January 2015
IMPROVISATION and IMAGINATION are our main skills in focus this term.
Today we had a lesson based on simple acting and reacting exercises as well as an improv based on three elements. I placed a stool, a shoe and a paper cup on stage and they had to come up with the story behind the room looking like this. They did a non planned impro and then got 5 minutes to establish Who they are, Where they are and What they want. They then performed it, and also incorporated slow tempo in their routine.
We could see how important it is to keep working on clarity and connecting (voice, expressions and body).
Monday 1st of December 2014
We are working towards a devised performance, based on a South American story. Please make sure that your child practises their homework for next week. They are to read out loud, concentrating on intonation and articulation.
Please help them with this :-)
Monday 17th of November 2014
Friday 14th of November 2014
Students continued to work on their statues based on a story. This time they were only allowed to rely on silent communication and the statues "came alive", making the students improvise the given circumstances, in character. Students were challenged to commit to their characters and circumstances on stage and got feed back to implement. Well done!
Monday 3rd of November 2014
Students warmed up by a concentration game, which really gets both sides of your brain to boil. We call it concentration pattern. Students have to keep track of physical and verbal communication going on at the same time. Fun and hard :-) They discussed in groups statues and characters that they could create from a story they had read in class with Mr Jonathan. Based on this, they created characters and situations and performed it for the group.
Monday 27th of October 2014
statues-impro-style of performance
Today students worked in groups on creating statues, using non verbal communication.
We focused on clarity of movement and expression.
The groups worked out an improvizational piece for each statue and had to carry them out in three different styles: normal, robot and musical. Students performed for each other and got feed back on their work.
Tuesday 21st of October 2014
Based on the work we did last week, the students created a movement routine with focus on tempo, size and levels. They tried to tell the story of the man responsible for our knowledge of sight, which they have learned in unit work, looking at ancient civilizations. We found that the stories carried over and we will keep working on being specific wirh our quality of movement.
Monday 13th of October 2014
Movement choreography in progress
Today, we started out with a dream journey where students are to experience an improvised story (told by me). They are challanged to see, feel, hear and experience the imagined circumstances. Then they teamed up, to do the same in small groups, only this time, physically experiencing the "dream". Then they chose one story that they would work on to create a performance, incorporating chosen actions, tempo, levels and qualities. The video shows work in progress and we will develop this choreography further adding more precise clarity of movement and voice.
Tuesday 7th of October 2014
We started the new unit talking about what we learned and focused on last term. Movement with all the elements, such as tempo, rythm, levels, qualities. This term we will in addition to keep building our movement skills, focus strongly on imagination. We started with a dream journey, which took the students through imaginary circumstances. Based on what they "experienced" in the dream, they made a movement piece, implementing tempo and qualities.

Clarity-Expression-Quality |
The group continues to improve on the skills we are working on. They are showing progress in clarity and quality of movement.
We incorporated rights and responsibilities by creating physical and verbal expressions on the theme. The students worked in groups, after a quick brain storming.
Monday 1st of September 2014
We continue to work on concentration, clarity of expression through face, body and movement. We have added terms such as levels, qualities, expressions and tempo.
We started working on improvisation with verbal communication and all students have their name down on the action board for the IB attitude of enthusiasm.
This group is really getting in to this way of working :-)
Monday 25th of August 2014
Today in performing arts, we continued to work on our clearity of expression and movement. We worked on our tempo and spacial awareness with a robot exercise. Students worked in groups and made statues, focusing on team work, non-verbal communication and clarity. When performing for the others, one of the statues came alive and the students had their 1st meeting with full-on improvisation.
A good lesson, ending with an improvisation called a dream, where the students` imagination and ability to believe in fiction is exercised.
Imagination |
4th grade had a booming start to their PA lessons. We are a slightly smaller group and we therefore managed to get through a lot in this first lesson. At the end of the lesson we realized that we had done exercises that touch on all the areas that we wish to focus on: Rythm, imagination, movement, characters, concentration, improvisation and voice.
Looking forward to seeing the development:-)
